Richard D. Mayor, of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018 at the age of 82.
Rich was born to Hungarian parents Julius and Rose Cserbak Mayor on December 8, 1935. He grew up an only child in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended St. Emeric’s and West Tech High School. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Trudy Kennelly. They were blessed with two adopted babies…Christopher in 1971, and Jennifer in 1973.
After serving his country in the United States Air Force, Rich worked as a railroad engineer for Penn Central, followed by Conrail, and finally retiring from Norfolk Southern in 2000.
Rich enjoyed reading, shooting trap and skeet, organic gardening on their little two acre farm, solitary time chopping firewood, and loved old movies and music. He was politically active, always writing letters (with Trudy’s editing) fighting for the underdogs and environmental issues. His humble faith was strong and he kept a list of people to pray for, which kept growing longer every day.
Rich is survived by his wife of 51 years, Trudy Mayor; his son, Christopher Mayor; his daughter, Jennifer Mayor Hirzel; and his very much-loved grandchildren: Nicholas, Chelsea, Mary, Michael and Joseph Hirzel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Rose Mayor.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at St. Mary of the Falls Church, 25615 Bagley Road, Olmsted Falls, OH 44138, from 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018. (Vestibule entrance is the door on parking lot side) with a Memorial Mass to follow at 11:00 AM.
Burial will be private on another day for immediate family at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association for research. https://alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/

Trudy I am so saddened by this news of your wonderful man, Rich.
You & Rich took me in, a stranger from Australia, to have a holiday in your home, I left knowing you & your wonderful family, Jenny & children, Chris & Mary Anne. I have such special memories of seeming to acquire an extra family. I left feeling like I had known you all for years.
I have very special thoughts of both you & Rich Trudy….Your friend for ever, love Dee
