The Catholic Church prefers that the body or the cremains of the deceased be present for the funeral rite.  The cremated remains, however, are to be treated with the same respect as the body before cremation.  The church requires that the cremains should have a reverent disposition, including a burial in a grave or entombment in a mausoleum or columbarium.
