Richard F. Cottom

Richard F. Cottom Jr.—known to many as “Big Rich” or simply “Rich”—passed away at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy of strength, determination, and an unforgettable presence that touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Born in 1965, Rich was a proud member of the Olmsted Falls community and a celebrated Bulldog. During his years at Olmsted Falls High School, he became a standout football player known for his toughness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his team. As a middle guard for the Bulldogs in the early 1980s, Rich earned Second-Team All-Ohio honors, distinguishing him as one of the top football players in the state. His incredible strength and work ethic were further cemented in school history, where he recorded one of the program’s top Strongman Total performances at 1,030 pounds. Rich continued his love of football beyond high school, playing at Potomac State College in West Virginia and the University of Findlay in Ohio. His dedication to education matched his dedication to the sport, ultimately earning his Master’s Degree from the University of Akron—a testament to his drive, discipline, and commitment to personal growth. Rich’s larger-than-life presence, unmatched strength, and the impression he left on others were truly remarkable. Whether on the football field, spending time with friends, or surrounded by family, Rich was known for his determination, loyalty, sense of humor, and his ability to make people feel seen, supported, and valued. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard F. Cottom Sr. and Patricia Esson Cottom. He is survived by his sisters, Patsy Cottom and Katie Cottom; his nieces, Trisha Feighan and Kalyn McMillan; and his nephew, Keegan Cottom. Rich will be remembered not only for his accomplishments as an athlete, but for the man he was—the strength he carried, the memories he created, and the countless lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the stories shared by family, friends, former teammates, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Rich’s life at Razzles in Olmsted Falls on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 1–4 PM.
