John P. Campbell, MD, age 75, passed peacefully September 23, 2021 of complications from diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. Born in 1946, he grew up in the Beechview neighborhood of South Hills, where he was a lifeguard at the Beechview Swimming Pool and graduated from South Hills Catholic High School. A graduate from Pitt in 1968, and Hershey Medical School in 1972, he completed residency/fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic and worked at the former Akron Clinic and Akron General Hospital as an Internal Medicine/Endocrinology physician. John returned to Cleveland Clinic in the Dept. of Preventive Medicine in 1989 and retired in 2011. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic, integrity, a love for Beto’s Pizza and the difficult life of being a Pittsburgh sports fan in Cleveland. He shared a birthday with daughter Amy, who later shared one of her kidneys, granting him 9 more years of life. He blazed the trail into medicine as the first of 5 physicians in the Campbell family. John was preceded in death by parents, Harry and Alvera Campbell, aunts Mary Disipio and Grace and Jean Passaro. He is survived by Gayle, who provided selfless, attentive care until his final hours; children: Amy (Mike) Lane of Lebanon, OH, Dr. Tim (Emily) Campbell of Williamsburg, VA; brother Dr. Tom (Nancy) Campbell of Fox Chapel; grandchildren: Alexa & Logan Lane and Karina & Camila Campbell; niece & nephew: Drs. Natalie & Patrick Campbell, and many cousins & friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. He was a former parishioner of St Catherine of Sienna in Beechview.
