Hubert Pelham Baker Sr. also known as “PaPa” was born Sunday, June 27,

1920 in Odenville, Alabama to the proud parents of the late Elder and Ella Baker. Hubert was the youngest of a set of identical twins boys; entering this world alongside his brother, Herbert Eugene Baker.

At a young age, Hubert dedicated his life to God at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ragland, Alabama. He lived a full and harmonious childhood, graduating from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduating from high school, Hubert enrolled in Tuskegee Institute.

In 1942 Hubert made the unselfish decision to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. That decision took Hubert outside of the United States to fight in the European Theater. That campaign included engagements in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe and Rhineland. As a soldier in the 999th Field Artillery Battalion, Hubert served as an expert gunner with the MM Carbine. He later was trained as an Occupational

Specialist in communication as a Combat Telephone Switchboard Operator 650.

While serving his tour of duty Hubert amassed numerous declarations and citations. Hubert earned the rank of Tech 5 Sergeant. In 1944 Hubert earned the Purple Heart in Europe as a result of being wounded while defending his country. Even after recovering from his injury, Hubet1: decided not to return home to the United States but to remain with his battalion throughout the remainder of his tour of duty; which included Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe in 1945. Hubert also earned the European African American Middle Eastern Service Medal with four bronze stars. The stars represent his engagement in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe and Rhineland. Additional medals include The Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Hubert was honorably discharged in November 20, 1945.

Seeking new adventures Hubert and his brother decided to relocate to Cleveland, Ohio in 1945. Upon arriving in Cleveland Hubert worked at Republic Steel. In 1949 he married his “Gal” Callie Mae Latimer Baker. Hubert and Callie provided a loving, hardworking, and God filled home for

their five children; Hubert Pelham Baker Jr. aka “Sonnie”, Meredith Alvester Baker Sr., Frederick Arnold Baker Sr., Dederick Arnold Baker, and Kim Juanita Renee Baker Yarbrough. Hubert and Callie enjoyed spending time with their children, attending baseball games, football games, track meets, cooking and sewing classes at Advent Lutheran Evangelical Church, as well as teaching Sunday school.

After 38 years of service at Republic Steel, missing only two days of work; Hubert retired. After retirement he dedicated his life to caring for his lovely wife, Callie Baker until God called her home in 2004.

During his golden years Hubert enjoyed spending time with his grandkids starting all over again with baseball, football, basketball, track, cheerleading, and equestrian riding.
